More Than Just a Place to Go: Why We Stay Open When Schools Close
February 6, 2026
Our teens at the 6th Street Club recently took a deep dive into Arctic biology with a hands-on experiment exploring how blubber keeps animals warm in freezing temperatures.
Why Science Experiments Matter for Teens
-
Hands-On Application: Moving beyond the textbook makes complex biological concepts like insulation and thermoregulation “click” in a way a lecture never can.
-
Critical Thinking: By observing how fat acts as a thermal barrier, our teens are practicing the scientific method—hypothesizing, testing, and concluding.
-
Engagement that Sticks: Let’s face it: the best way to keep a teenager interested in learning is to make it interactive and relevant to the world around them.
Bridging the Gap to Academic Success
This isn’t just a fun afternoon activity; it’s a core part of our Academic Success programming. At the Club, we believe that learning shouldn’t stop when the school bell rings.
By providing a safe space to explore STEM concepts, we help our members build the confidence and curiosity they need to thrive in the classroom. When teens stay actively engaged in learning outside of school, they are statistically more likely to graduate on time and pursue higher education.
Keeping our youth inspired helps them succeed in school and in life. This is just one of the many reasons why #TennesseeNeedsClubKids.
