Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley recently partnered with the University of Tennessee’s College of Education to help Club members meet critical literacy milestones. Current college students enrolled in the College of Education program are working in various Clubs and serving in the role as Literacy Collaborative Project Instructors.

Working with small groups, typically 2 – 4 members, allows the Instructors to provide personalized instructional services that support K-3rd grade student learning and development. Sessions consist of experiential activities and assessments.

The literacy program focuses on the implementation of evidence-based practices that support student learning. Instructors are tasked with creating hands-on activities designed to engage students in problem-solving and reflection, while allowing them the opportunity to create, produce, present, respond, and connect to content.

“I’ve just been admitted to the Masters Program at UTK, and will be majoring in Elementary Education. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work at the Boys & Girls Club, and get real life experience using the skills I’m currently learning in my Phonics and Comprehension Class. I have always loved reading and I know that I want to teach reading for the rest of my life.”

“I like working with Miss Chloe, because she’s really nice and patient. She helps me practice my reading and writing, and that is making me a much better reader and writer. Plus, she lets me pick what books I want to read, and I always get the books about animals, because I love them.”
