In 1969, a student attending the University of Tennessee seized an interesting opportunity through the UT work-study program. As a young man, Elliott Stroupe attended the Caswell Boys & Girls Club and immediately thought the job offered at Boys & Girls Club was the ideal work-study job for him. For the next 10 years, Elliott worked at the Club, enjoying the impact he was making on young lives. He then accepted an opportunity to work at Webb School of Knoxville, and in 1985, the idea was born to partner students at Webb with Club members at the Caswell Boys & Girls Club.
Now, 40 years later, the program is going strong. Every Wednesday during the school year, students from Webb visit the Haslam Family Club University to work in small groups with Club members. Some members receive help with subjects they may be struggling with in school, while others benefit from the Webb School’s Robotic Club members teaching them about coding. Whatever the activity, one thing remains constant: the intrinsic benefit of these two communities coming together to forge a relationship of mutual respect.
“Helping at Boys & Girls Club was my most gratifying experience as a Webb student. I grew so much as a person working with the Club members.” – Webb student (graduating Senior)
